Sometimes, physical activities can be used to illustrate Biblical teachings. One of my frequent activities is target shooting, or as some folks would call it, plinking. It is something I enjoy, shooting ammunition at various targets at various distances. As I was at the shooting range on an unusually warm January day this year, the Lord gave me this sermon.
A deceitful bow is one that will not shoot an arrow straight. The application is that the people were off target. The book of Hosea was written by the prophet Hosea under the divine inspiration of God. This was written during some very dark hours of the history of Israel. Foreign invadors were in the land. Princes and priests were corrupt. The knowledge of God was rejected.

OFF TARGET
    We, like Hosea, live in amongst a nation, a world, that is “off target.” Now, in target shooting, whether using a bow, rifle, or handgun, there are a multitude of reasons why a person might be “off target.” Perhaps the shooter is not aiming at the target. Perhaps he cannot see the target. Maybe his gun is bad. Perhaps the sights are off. Maybe his breathing is not right. The problem might be the way he is holding the gun. Perhaps he does not know how to use the weapon correctly. Or, maybe he is just having a bad day.
    At the end of the day though, one fact remains, if a shooter does not hit the target, he has not hit the target. End of story. All the excuses in the world could be said some of which may be true, but the fact is that the target has been missed.
    There are some people who miss by a few centimeters, and others who could not hit the broad side of the barn. But when your life depends on hitting the target a miss is still a miss. Getting close only counts when using grenades!

“Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” (1 John 3:4)
The word used in the New Testament for sin is a Greek word that was also used in spear throwing and was indicitive of “missing the mark.” Of course, it also means to err, to sin, so our King James translation is accurate here. Sin is the breaking of God's law.
Whether throwing a spear, shooting a gun, or living right – there is a standard. The standard is the way in which all are measured by. Some folks would rather use someone else as their standard rather than the true standard. So you will hear a shooter say after missing the target, “I was better than so-and-so.” Sinners will also say the same thing. And maybe that was the case, but the fact is both MISSED THE MARK!

“But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15-16)
God's holiness is the standard! Not your neighbor. Not Adolf Hitler. Not your mom. And not your pastor.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God...” (Romans 3:23)
In and of ourselves, we have all come short! We have all missed the mark! Even the most holy among you, the most seasoned of all Christians will admit that they have come short. Perhaps you are "better" than Adolf Hitler or Karl Marx, but being better than someone else is not anything to brag about when in and of yourselves we have all missed the mark!

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)
To miss the target does not require much, so it is quite easy to do. You do not have to have any training, you do not have to work for it. Many today are missing the target. Few there be that even find it.

HINDRANCES TO HITTING THE TARGET
“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (Acts 17:11)
A major hindrance to hitting the target can be sight. In order to get the shot on target, you have to see properly. You have to see the target so you can be sure to hit the target. You have to see the front sights (if using a gun) so you can aim well. Seeing both near and far is key here. When I am on the range, I cannot see the target without my glasses. Spiritually speaking, in order to hit the target, we must have our “Biblical Glasses” on.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)
Seeing is not all there is to it, of course, because a man might be able to see the target and also be able to see the front sight on the weapon, but he might miss because he does not understand how to put all that information together. Some folks will miss the target because they are not rightly dividing the Word of Truth. A silly illustration is the fact that a person could say that everyone ought to commit suicide. In one place of Scripture we read that Judas went and hanged himself. And in another place, we read the words “go thou and do likewise.” If a person does not put all the information together properly, the conclusion might be way off target! We MUST be sure to RIGHTLY divide the Word of truth so that we remain on target!

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalms 119:105)
Sometimes improper lighting will cause a man to miss the target. The target needs to be lit up and the sights also need to be lit – to be able to see what is near and far. The Scriptures give us the light we need - both to our feet and our path – both near and far!

“Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.” (2 Thessalonians 2:15)
There are folks who will miss the target because they are standing on shaky ground. Spiritually speaking, if you are not standing right, you are going to miss the target. Stand on solid ground of Christ and His Word!

“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive...” (Ephesians 4:14)
The wind can cause a shooter some headaches, especially bow shooting but also even long range rifle shooting. Spiritually we must also watch out for the wind. Oh, how many have missed the target because of the wind. Doctrinal winds are blowing, we must make sure that we compensate for that wind so we always hit the target!

“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2)
Sometimes folks miss their target because they get distracted. How easy it is to get distracted by the world and all it has to offer! A true marksman must always be focused so as to hit the target. Nothing can distract. Yet between the Devil, the world, and everything that they have to offer there is a lot of distraction out there. This one hindrance has caused a lot of folks to miss their target. Keep your mind on the target!

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” (II Corinthians 11:13-14)
Some people miss the target by design. They are not trying to hit it. These are false prophets, workers of Satan. And by their poor example, they will lead others astray. We must watch out for them. They will try to even deceive the very elect if possible. And they are good at what they do!

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)
    Pride can cause a man to falter. Oh, how many folks have missed their target because of pride. One day we had a visitor at our house (he will remain nameless) who bragged that if he took his wife shooting that we could stand in front of the targets and that would be the safest place to stand because she could not hit the broadside of the barn. But then on the shooting range, he did not do well at all, missing more than he was hitting. Usually he is a good marksman, but that day he was not doing so well!
    We must watch out for pride. Always keep in mind what the Bible says in I Corinthians 15:10, which says, “But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.”
    When we know we have hit the targets and are shooting well, let us never get the big head and think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. We ought to instead praise God for His grace and be willing to help those who are off target:

"Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself." (Galatians 6:1-3)

GETTING ON TARGET AND STAYING ON TARGET
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
In order to hit the right target, you have to have the proper tools. The Bible is the weapon we must use!

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” (John 5:39)
Only the Scriptures tell us about Christ the Redeemer. A man who will reject the Bible is off target! The only way of salvation is through Jesus and only the Bible can point folks to Him!

“And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.” (1 Samuel 17:39)
Like any other weapon, the Bible must be proven – tested, tried, and shown to be of great strength. A person cannot pick up a bow and arrow (or a handgun) and consistently hit the target at 50 yards without a lot of practice. So it is spiritually... You cannot leave your Bible sitting on the table week after week without picking it up, and expect to be able to be on target with it.

On the range, a man who has never picked up a handgun or very seldom uses it will be ashamed because he will not hit the target as much as someone who is skilled with the handgun. And spiritually speaking, a person who does not study will be ashamed when he cannot hit the target by rightly dividing the truth. Let us encourage one another to stay in the Word!

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalms 119:11)
The Word of God will keep us on target!

CONCLUSION

The world around us is not even coming close to hitting the target, and some of God's people are not on target either. May we as God's people stay on target and show others the way to get on target! May we never be described as a “DECEITFUL BOW.”

Help The Economy: Buy American Guns!

So the economy is suffering, and until we elect a better President and get a solid pro-American congress,
there is not much we can do....except buy American! Obviously, it is getting harder and harder to buy American products these days. Many American made goods are more expensive than things made in other places like China. (Slave labor always saves money!) Yet that is not always the case. Here is a partial list of some good gun makers here in the USA that deserve our money. Let's help the economy this year and get an American gun (or two or three....)

Here are some companies I have dealt with through the years and can recommend. I am know there are others. Do your own research. Try some American gun manufacturers out and give them your business. I know they will appreciate it!

New Mexico and Ohio

Buckeye Firearms Association reported that Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and New Mexico Department of Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Gorden E. Eden, Jr. have signed an agreement that permits reciprocity between their states for citizens who have valid concealed carry permits.

"I am pleased that this agreement between Ohio and New Mexico will allow Ohioans who have concealed carry permits the same rights to carry a concealed handgun in the State of New Mexico, as well as New Mexicans who have concealed carry permits to do the same in Ohio," said Attorney General DeWine.

Secretary Eden reiterated those remarks. "As proponents of the Second Amendment, the New Mexico Department of Public Safety is happy to extend concealed carry rights to licensed Ohioans, as those same rights are extended to licensed New Mexicans who visit Ohio."

This is actually more of a victory for residents of New Mexico visiting Ohio, rather than the other way around. Since I have family in New Mexico, I know full well the way it worked prior to this agreement is that Buckeyes visiting the Land of Enchantment could legally carry in NM, but folks from NM visiting OH could not carry.

Still newsworthy nonetheless and I am glad to see the state of Ohio entering into another reciprocity agreement...especially with a state that does still hold a special place in my heart. Maybe we can get a few more agreements in the coming year!

Bank Fees

Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the fees some banks are charging. Most of the talk has centered around Bank of America's announcement about some $5 per month fee for debit card users. Unfortunately some folks are calling on Congress to take action.

Let's not jump to conclusions, people. Government has no business getting involved in this matter. As a matter of fact, government really does a poor job of "fixing things." Every American out there who is upset about the fees being charged at their current bank, just do like I did: SWITCH BANKS.

As our late great President Ronald Regan said, "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"

Most cities I am aware of have several choices - big banks, small banks, credit unions... And shoot, if you can't find a bank to tuck your money in, hide it under your pillow.

My switch occurred long before any Marxist kids came out of their parents' basements to protest on Wall Street. And if any of you guys or girls are reading this who are part of that movement, don't blame the rich people for your woes. Work hard and educate yourself so you can vote intelligently in the next election.

Push for Gun Control Treaty Continues
A UN committee wrapped up a week-long series of meetings on a massive treaty that could undermine both U.S. sovereignty and the Second Amendment. This is the third round of meetings by the so-called “preparatory committee” on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) as the UN gears up for final negotiations in 2012.

The most comprehensive treaty of its kind, the ATT would regulate weapons trade throughout the world on everything from battleships to bullets.

And as information trickles out of Turtle Bay in New York City, it is obvious the UN is getting more clever about taking the focus off of “small arms.”

With an eye cast in the direction of the U.S.—in particular, toward the U.S. Senate which must ratify the treaty—the most recent Draft Paper for the Arms Trade Treaty recognizes in its preamble “the sovereign right of States to determine any regulation of internal transfers of arms and national ownership exclusively within their territory, including through national constitutional protections on private ownership.”

That statement, taken by itself, is troubling. Americans’ right to keep and bear arms exists whether or not it is “recognized” by some UN committee. The right enshrined in the Second Amendment predates our own Constitution, and does not need an international stamp of approval.

But the preamble aside, the scope of the treaty is what’s most damaging. Though negotiations will continue for another year, some provisions are certain to be contained in the final draft.

The ATT will, at the very least, require gun owner registration and microstamping of ammunition. And it will define manufacturing so broadly that any gun owner who adds so much as a scope or changes a stock on a firearm would be required to obtain a manufacturing license.

It would also likely include a ban on many semi-automatic firearms (i.e., the Clinton gun ban) and demand the mandatory destruction of surplus ammo and confiscated firearms.

Any suggestion that the treaty might not impact all firearms—right down to common hunting rifles—was thrown out the window after seeing the reaction to the Canadian government’s motion that hunting rifles be exempted from the treaty.

The Canadian representative caused a stir among the other delegates this week when he proposed that the treaty include the following language: “Reaffirming that small arms have certain legitimate civilian uses, including sporting, hunting, and collecting purposes.”

While Canadian gun owners were pleased with even the slightest movement by its government to protect gun rights, the proposed language is yet another indication that ALL firearms are “on the table.”
Feeble as it is, Canadian proposal was viewed as a major wrench thrown in the works, and had the anti-gunners crying foul.

Kenneth Epps is a representative with the Canadian anti-gun group known as Project Plowshares. According to Postmedia News, Epps said Canada’s move is hampering efforts to forge a comprehensive global arms control regime.

Noting that there is little difference between a sniper rifle and a hunting rifle, Epps said, “The problem is that once you introduce exemptions, others will do the same. It’s the thin edge of the wedge….From a humanitarian perspective, all firearms need to be controlled, and that’s the bottom line.”

Such statements are eagerly welcomed by the Obama administration. Since it has been largely stymied in pushing gun control in Congress, U.S. negotiators will push the envelope as far as they can.

The U.S. Undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security, a key negotiator of the ATT, is anti-gun former Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher of California. Tauscher said last year that her team at the State Department “will work between now and the UN Conference in 2012 to negotiate a legally binding Arms Trade Treaty.”

In 2009, newly confirmed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reversed the position of the Bush administration (which voted against the treaty in 2008) and stated that “The United States is prepared to work hard for a strong international standard in this area.”

International standards, however, may not be the only, or even the primary, objective. Former ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, observes that, “The hidden agenda of a lot of the people who sought to negotiate a small arms treaty really had less to do with reducing dangers internationally and a lot more to do with creating a framework for gun control statutes at the national level.”

Bolton explains that pressure from the groups agitating for the treaty—groups such as Amnesty International, Oxfam, and the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA)—is geared toward constraining the freedoms of countries that recognize gun rights. “And specifically, and most importantly, [to] constrain the United States,” Bolton said.
Negotiators, from abroad and within the Obama administration, view arms control as protecting human rights, rather than seeing civilian disarmament for what it is—the favorite tool of despots, dictators and tyrants to maintain power by engaging in mass murder and genocide.

And, perversely, in many instances those resisting an oppressive, genocidal regime would be held in the same light as criminals and terrorists and be legally prohibited under the ATT from purchasing weapons.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) makes this point in a letter he drafted to President Obama: “[T]he underlying philosophy of the Arms Trade Treaty is that transfers to and from governments are presumptively legal, while transfers to non-state actors…are, at best, problematic.”

Sen. Moran’s letter, in which he is joined by other pro-gun Senators, warned that any treaty “that seeks in any way to regulate the domestic manufacture, assembly, possession, transfer, or purchase of firearms, ammunition, and related items would be completely unacceptable to us.”

U.S. freedom is clearly in the sights of the ATT. The time to take action is now, before the treaty moves into final negotiations.

ACTION: Urge your Senators to oppose any UN effort to impose restrictions on the Second Amendment, and to sign on to Sen. Moran’s letter to President Obama in opposition to the ATT.

National Rifle Association's Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre addressed the United Nations this afternoon. He told the U.N. to not interfere with the Second Amendment freedoms of Americans and pledged to continue the fight to preserve civilian ownership of firearms in the U.S. He said the NRA will oppose any U.N. provision that seeks to prohibit or regulate U.S. civilian firearm ownership. LaPierre said in his remarks, "The cornerstone of our freedom is the Second Amendment. Neither the United Nations, nor any other foreign influence, has the authority to meddle with the freedoms guaranteed by our Bill of Rights, endowed by our Creator, and due to all humankind."

Statement of the National Rifle Association of America

Mr. Chairman, thank you for this brief opportunity to address the committee. I am Wayne

LaPierre and for 20 years now, I have served as Executive Vice President of the National Rifle

Association of America.

The NRA was founded in 1871, and ever since has staunchly defended the rights of its 4 million

members, America's 80 million law-abiding gun owners, and freedom-loving Americans

throughout our country. In 1996, the NRA was recognized as an NGO of the United Nations

and, ever since then, has defended the constitutional freedom of Americans in this arena. The

NRA is the largest and most active firearms rights organization in the world and, although some

members of this committee may not like what I have to say, I am proud to defend the tens of

millions of lawful people NRA represents.

This present effort for an Arms Trade Treaty, or ATT, is now in its fifth year. We have closely

monitored this process with increasing concern. We've reviewed the statements of the countries

participating in these meetings. We've listened to other NGOs and read their numerous

proposals and reports, as well as carefully examined the papers you have produced.

We've watched, and read ... listened and monitored. Now, we must speak out.

The Right to Keep and Bear Arms in defense of self, family and country is ultimately selfevident

and is part of the Bill of Rights to the United States Constitution. Reduced to its core, it

is about fundamental individual freedom, human worth, and self-destiny.

We reject the notion that American gun owners must accept any lesser amount of freedom in

order to be accepted among the international community. Our Founding Fathers long ago

rejected that notion and forged our great nation on the principle of freedom for the individual

citizen - not for the government.

Mr. Chairman, those working on this treaty have asked us to trust them ... but they've proven to

be unworthy of that trust.

We are told "Trust us; an ATT will not ban possession of any civilian firearms." Yet, the

proposals and statements presented to date have argued exactly the opposite, and - perhaps most

importantly - proposals to ban civilian firearms ownership have not been rejected.

We are told "Trust us; an ATT will not interfere with state domestic regulation of firearms."

Yet, there are constant calls for exactly such measures.

We are told "Trust us; an ATT will only affect the illegal trade in firearms." But then we're told

that in order to control the illegal trade, all states must control the legal firearms trade.

We are told, "Trust us; an ATT will not require registration of civilian firearms." Yet, there are

numerous calls for record-keeping, and firearms tracking from production to eventual

destruction. That's nothing more than gun registration by a different name.

We are told, "Trust us; an ATT will not create a new international bureaucracy." Well, that's

exactly what is now being proposed -- with a tongue-in-cheek assurance that it will just be a

SMALL bureaucracy.

We are told, "Trust us; an ATT will not interfere with the lawful international commerce in

civilian firearms." But a manufacturer of civilian shotguns would have to comply with the same

regulatory process as a manufacturer of military attack helicopters.

We are told, "Trust us; an ATT will not interfere with a hunter or sport shooter travelling

internationally with firearms." However, he would have to get a so-called "transit permit"

merely to change airports for a connecting flight.

Mr. Chairman, our list of objections extends far beyond the proposals I just mentioned.

Unfortunately, my limited time today prevents me from providing greater detail on each of our

objections. I can assure you, however, that each is based on American law, as well as the

fundamental rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

It is regrettable that proposals affecting civilian firearms ownership are woven throughout the

proposed ATT. That being the case, however, there is only one solution to this problem: the

complete removal of civilian firearms from the scope of any ATT. I will repeat that point as it is

critical and not subject to negotiation - civilian firearms must not be part of any ATT. On this

there can be no compromise, as American gun owners will never surrender their Second

Amendment freedom.

It is also regrettable to find such intense focus on record-keeping, oversight, inspections,

supervision, tracking, tracing, surveillance, marking, documentation, verification, paper trails

and data banks, new global agencies and data centers. Nowhere do we find a thought about

respecting anyone's right of self-defense, privacy, property, due process, or observing personal

freedoms of any kind.

Mr. Chairman, I'd be remiss i f I didn't also discuss the politics of an ATT. For the United States

to be a party to an ATT, it must be ratified by a two-thirds vote of the U.S. Senate. Some do not

realize that under the U.S. Constitution, the ultimate treaty power is not the President's power to

negotiate and sign treaties; it is the Senate's power to approve them.

To that end, it's important for the Preparatory Committee to understand that the proposed ATT is

already strongly opposed in the Senate - the very body that must approve it by a two-thirds

majority. There is a letter addressed to President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton that is

currently being circulated for the signatures of Senators who oppose the ATT. Once complete,

this letter will demonstrate that the proposed ATT will not pass the U.S. Senate.

So there is extremely strong resistance to the ATT in the United States, even before the treaty is

tabled. We are not aware of any precedent for this - rejecting a proposed treaty before it's even

submitted for consideration - but it speaks to the level of opposition. The proposed ATT has

become more than just controversial, as the Internet is awash with articles and messages calling

for its rejection. And those messages are all based on the same objection - infringement on the

constitutional freedom of American gun owners.

The cornerstone of our freedom is the Second Amendment. Neither the United Nations, nor any

other foreign influence, has the authority to meddle with the freedoms guaranteed by our Bill of

Rights, endowed by our Creator, and due to all humankind.

Therefore, the NRA will fight with all of its strength to oppose any ATT that includes civilian

firearms within its scope.

Stop The Fear Mongering

Politicians make me so angry when they start fear mongering. Right now, the Barack Hussein Obama is on the news telling people that if the debt ceiling is not raised then seniors are not going to get their social security checks and all sorts of bad things are going to happen.   He reminds me of Chicken Little who was always certain the sky was going to fall.

Unfortunately, like many dictators, his power feeds on fear. This fear mongering is intended to keep people from examining the real issues.

In a nutshell, the real issue is not a revenue problem. It is a spending problem. Our government is out of control and spending like crazy. They are wasting our money and ruining our country in the process.

There comes a time when every responsible adult realizes that you can't spend money you don't have. Borrowing more money is not the answer.   Cut the spending!    Get rid of non essential government employees. Stop the bailouts.    Downsizing is the answer.

And if those in power cannot figure this out, then we need to fire them and elect adults who understand a little about finances!

The 4th of July cover article of Time magazine claims that the Constitution is irrelevant.

Frightening.

As proof of its irrelevance, Time lists a dozen products of modern society inconceivable to the framers, including antibiotics, "sexting," and Medicare. The Constitution's only virtue, they say, is that it has many meanings and thus leaves us able to do whatever we want to do.

But not everything has changed since 1787. When it comes to ordering society under the rule of law, what is most important? Knowledge of "collateralized debt obligations" or knowledge of human nature?

Here are a few things the framers did know something about: Religious Freedom. Education. Tyranny. Friendship. Happiness. Sovereignty of the People. Virtue.

The Constitution does not allow us to do whatever we want to do. In the words of James Madison, the Constitution was framed out of the belief that "it is the reason, alone, of the public, that ought to control and regulate the government. The passions ought to be controlled and regulated by the government."

The genius of the Constitution lies in its having a definite meaning on the fundamentals--that every individual has rights, that the people are sovereign, and that the governmental powers must remain separated--while leaving wide latitude to local government, or the people themselves, on issues not specifically addressed in the Constitution.

The framers were no gods; the amendment procedure was included for good reason. Yet for more than two centuries the United States has flourished in a project long thought impossible: self-government.

Liberty. Equality. Self-government.

If the Fourth of July is a celebration of these things, it is a celebration of the Constitution as much as the Declaration of Independence. No constitution in history has proven itself more deeply committed to these principles, and no nation has been more richly blessed in return.

The basic truth within the Constitution is that the government cannot have limitless power, for the simple reason that government is made up of people. A Constitution with no definite meaning gives free reign to the passions of those people within and without the government. A Constitution with a meaning honored and obeyed becomes a guardian of all people, for it sustains a government that is strong within its defined powers but limited in order to protect the liberty and equality of citizens.

Instead of scoffing at those Americans concerned that their federal government has overrun its limits in the name of energy and modernity, perhaps Time should consider what an American President said about the principles of the Declaration and the Constitution on the 150th anniversary of July 4th, 1776:

"It is often asserted that the world has made a great deal of progress since 1776, that we have had new thoughts and new experiences which have given us a great advance over the people of that day, and that we may therefore very well discard their conclusions for something more modern. But that reasoning can not be applied to this great charter. If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions. If anyone wishes to deny their truth or their soundness, the only direction in which he can proceed historically is not forward, but backward toward the time when there was no equality, no rights of the individual, no rule of the people. Those who wish to proceed in that direction can not lay claim to progress. They are reactionary. Their ideas are not more modern, but more ancient, than those of the Revolutionary fathers."

Today, the state House concurred on Senate Bill 17 by a 56 to 39 vote. SB 17 passed in the state Senate by a 25 to 7 vote on April 13. This concealed carry reform bill now goes to Governor John Kasich for approval.

Senate Bill 17, sponsored by state Senator Tim Schaffer (R-31), would eliminate the current confusing standards of carrying a firearm in a motor vehicle. In addition, this bill would also allow permit holders to carry a firearm for self-defense in a restaurant that serves alcohol, provided the individual is not consuming alcohol, thus eliminating another "victim zone" in Ohio.

Anti-Gun Treasure Realty

My wife and I have decided to use a different realtor for our vacation this year, and have already mailed them a check for the rental we chose. As a courtesy to you, I feel that you should know why because we did like your prices and what you had to offer. In fact you were the ones we were going to use, and had chosen a condo to rent for a week in ________.

We changed our minds based upon the following rule:

FIREARMS. Absolutely no firearms of any kind are allowed in the Property. Please understand that the Tenant will immediately lose his rental rights and be subject to expedited eviction with no refunds of all rental monies if a firearm is discovered on the premises. Tenant understands and acknowledges that any firearm found on the Property or left on the Property will removed by the appropriate authorities, not by the Agent.

This rule prohibits me from patronizing your business. So, I, my family and other gun owners will spend our money with your competitors.

I do respect your right to forbid firearms from your properties, and I do want to thank you very much for publishing this rule before we gave you any money. I understand that my choice may not cost you much financially, but there are four points that I hope and pray might cause you to reconsider your rule:

• “No Firearms” Rules Are Dangerous. Studies show that banning legal firearms actually increases the risk of violent crime. Many criminals already intent on committing robbery and assault will target places with “No Firearms” signs because they know no one will be able to stop them. Such a sign only prohibits law-abiding citizens, including off duty police officers, from being equipped to defend themselves.

• “No Firearms” rules like yours discourage Patrons. As “No Firearms” rules actually create a more dangerous environment, many alert consumers encourage their friends and families to avoid businesses that prohibit the lawful carry of defensive firearms on their premises for their safety. Your rule will only prevent the law abiding gun owners (the “good guys”) from carrying their guns into your business. Only criminals (the “bad guys”) will ignore your rule and bring their guns anyway.

• Concealed Handgun Licensees Are Proven Good Guys. One must undergo a rigorous background check, be fingerprinted, and receive training on the safe use and legal ramifications of carrying a handgun concealed for self defense by a state-approved instructor. Neither felons nor anyone with drug convictions may hold a concealed handgun license.

• Legal Firearms Save Lives. In the 48 states that allow law-abiding citizens to carry firearms for self-defense, there have been numerous cases where a legally carried firearm prevented or stopped a violent attack.

The Spirit of Fear

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (II Timothy 1:7)

In nearly every debate about guns, the anti-gun folks nearly always turn to some form of fear mongering. This is true whether it is a discussion in the back yard between neighbors, a debate in Congress, an interview on television, or even a discussion among the saints in a church setting.   This is not of God, according to II Timothy 1:7. We must be aware of this and realize if it is not of God then it must be of the Devil.

FEAR OF GUNS
To some folks, simply the thought of a firearm will bring about a panic attack. Brethren, this ought not to be so. The truth is that a firearm, or any weapon for that matter, is simply an inanimate tool. As such, they can be used for good purposes or for evil purposes, but as a tool, they themselves are neither good nor evil. Nearly anything inanimate can fall into this category. Consider for example, the knife of your doctor. When he performs surgery it is for a good purpose. Yet place that knife in the hands of a killer and it is used for an evil purpose. Even a car can be used for good, or it can be used to kill.   (It can be used to take someone to church, or it could be rammed into a market and blown up.)

FEAR OF ACCIDENTS
Some fear that a gun in the house will mean certain death and destruction because of an accident. Yet, we realize that accidents can happen with stairs, bathtubs, electric outlets, bookshelves, stoves, etc. In fact statistically speaking, gun accidents are very rare.   The reason for their rarety is because of the fact that gun owners in America are responsible individuals. We understand what a gun can and can't do. And we know the proper rules for using a gun (any gun):

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use it.
Always know your target and what is beyond your target.

FEAR OF SHOOT OUTS
This fear is usually brought out when discussing the carrying of guns. Even though statistically it is shown to be a lie, many will act like the more citizens that carry guns the more crime there will be. For a great resource on the subject, read John Lott's excellent book, More Guns, Less Crime.    The idea that there will be more violent crimes and acts of terror in the street as result of carry laws has been shown time and time again to simply be not the case. As of this writing, 48 out of 50 states have some sort of carry laws on the books which allow their citizens to carry guns. In all these examples, none of the states have experienced the widespread problems that these laws were supposed to have caused, and no state has ever repealed their carry laws. As a matter of fact, the trend is that the states allow their laws to be more relaxed as time goes on. This is a testimony to the gun owners across this land.

CONCLUSION
It is truly a shame for the anti-gun folks to live in such fear. I can assure you that you are surrounded by gun owners many of whom carry guns every day.   Lawyers, politicians, barbers, mothers, pastors, deacons, businessmen, doctors, etc.are among us. Men, women, young and old are law abiding gun owners.

I do not carry a gun because I am afraid.   Fact is, if I were afraid, I would not leave my house. I carry a gun because of the sense of duty I feel to take care of myself and my family as well as other loved ones. Consider the following Scripture:

"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." (1Timothy 5:8)

God, in His Word, has placed a great sense of responsibility upon me as the head of my house. I am responsible to provide for my family. Of course, this includes many things, but it also means protection.   To fail to provide proper protection is a great sin, and I own firearms because they are the best way to make sure they are properly protected.    So the firearm is the best way to ensure of self-defense, defense of others (especially my own family), and defense of my home.    In Christ's time upon the earth, the sword was the best choice, which is why He said to the apostles: "...But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.   (Luke 22:36)

The Faith of Abram Demonstrated in Genesis 14

"And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way. And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed. And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram." (Gen 14:11-13)

A confederacy of kings from the northeast had swept through the land and devstated everything in its path.

Humanly speaking, this would have cause alarm on the part of the human inhabitants – including Abram – yet the God of Abram was in control.

This confederacy consisted of the kings of Shinar (Babylonia), Ellasar (leading tribe in Babylonia), Elam (Persia), and Goiim (translated nations, but probably a tribe in Babylonia). Even though the kingdoms would have been small at this point, their armies were fierce and cruel. From what we read in the verses prior to our text, the local kings had been placed under the service of Chederlaomer, king of Elam. For twelve years these kings and their city-states (Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboim, and Zoar) in and around the Jordanian plain and southern Dead Sea (salt sea) area served without any issues. . In the thirteenth year they rebelled so this invasion of the confederacy was to bring them back into submission.

Unfortunately, as the events unfolded, Lot was taken captive. Thankfully, someone escaped and went to tell Abram. Notice what Abram's course of action was:

"And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan. And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus. And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people." (Genesis 14:14-16)

In this, some would say that Abram should not have done what he did. Some criticize saints for owning weapons, going to war, etc. Some would have simply stayed home and talked about the great faith they have that God will take care of Lot. Yet, I would disagree...to sit around and talk about faith is not really faith at all. What we see in this passage is Abram's faith in action!

"Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?" (James 2:18-20)

Lot had been taken by some fierce warriors. No doubt Abram knew this and was well aware of what had just happened to the rebelling kings.... No doubt he is well aware of the fact that they are severely outnumbered. But he went anyway, knowing God was with him.

When he received word of Lot's situation, he was able to gather 318 men, all of whom were trained in his own household, arm them and go to rescue Lot. There was no hesitation to be found in this passage, only action. And you know what? Abram won.

In the cover of night, Abram led his men and attacked from all directions at once. They soon became demoralized and fled but Abram chased them all the way to north of Damascus and recaptured Lot as well as the other captives and booty that had been taken by them earlier. No doubt this would have been a surprise to not only the armies but also to the captives who figured there would be no hope for them.

Whether it is Abram here, Gideon's 300 against the 135,000, or David against Goliath.....all praise goes to God.

NRA Pittsburgh 2011

Several months ago I read that the NRA was holding its Annual Meetings and Exhibits in Pittsburgh PA. I have wanted to go to one of those for the last couple of years but they have been held in cities too far away for me (Phoenix in 2009; Charlotte in 2010). After confirming the distance, I made plans to go.

So on Saturday, April 30th, I left my house with a sack of peanut butter sandwiches and drove the three hours to Pittsburgh. By the time I got there, a lot of folks were there for the same event because traffic was absolutely bumper to bumper. Being more of a small town guy, I really don't like crowds and don't much care for cities. This was my first trip to Pittsburgh. I parked on the top of a very large parking garage and walked to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

It would be hard to put into writing the scope and size of the event but it was HUGE! I arrived at about 9:30am and stayed until after 5:30pm. Every gun manufacturer had displays, along with many other companies relevant to the gun industry. There were also some "famous people" who were there. It would be hard to mention all of them, and I certainly did not meet everyone I wanted to but some are definitely worth mentioning:

I was also pleasantly surprised to see my favorite local store - Fin Feather Fur of Ashland OH.

There are some things worth mentioning, but I'll save that for other posts.

The total attendance of the event for the entire weekend totaled 71,139! That is a HUGE number of gun owners, most of which were carrying their loaded guns (including yours truly). All those people with guns in one place and nobody was shot, nobody threatened anyone else, there was no violence at all to my knowledge. In fact, these were some of the best behaved people of any event I have ever been to. American gun owners are not bitter. We're not violent. We love our country and we love freedom. Events like this are proof positive that the Brady Campaign and others are lying to the American people about us.

I am glad that I had the opportunity to be there and hope to go again! God bless the NRA and God bless the USA!

My Favorite Gun

Ask anyone what their favorite gun and they will tell you. Perhaps it is a gun that belonged to your grandfather. Or maybe it is that first gun you owned. Some people base their favorites on the beauty of it. We all have different reasons for the guns we like.

Personally, my favorite gun is based solely on reliability. It holds no sentimental value. It is not pretty. My favorite gun is the one I know will go "bang" every single time I press the trigger...no matter what ammunition I feed it.

There will always be guns out there that people will claim is better than your favorite. Just remember this: the gun you own is better than the one you don't own. What works for you may not work for others.

"And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him." (1Samuel 17:38-39)

David rejected Saul's armor for five smooth stones and a sling, and killed Goliath with only one stone in I Samuel 17. Let me have my "favorite" gun any day over something that is supposed to be "better" any day!

Freedom of Religion

Earlier in the month, we had the privilege of going to a Bible Conference in South Shore KY. It was so good to see some friends and loved ones we had not seen for a while. Everytime we meet like that, or even from week to week here at the church where I pastor, I am so very thankful where we have the freedom of religion in this country. I am free to preach what the Lord leads, where He leads and how He leads...all without fear of persecution from the authorities. We ought to be thankful for that for this has not always been the case nor is it the case everywhere in the world.

Do you exercise your freedom of religion? And if that freedom were lost, would you still worship God in spirit and in truth?

"...We ought to obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29b)

I did not want to let today pass without mentioning the fact that on March 29, 1911 - exactly one hundred years ago today - the United States Army designated the Colt Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 to be its official sidearm. Indeed it served in many conflicts and wars and a number of enemy soldiers met their fate with the awesome stopping power of a well placed .45 ACP. To this day, the 1911 is still the sidearm of choice for many whose lives depend on it. Personally, I do not own one (yet) but have fired them and admired them for a number of years.

The Importance of Scripture

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." (II Timothy 3:16-17)

We often hear it said that the Bible is our ONLY rule of faith and practice. As a Baptist that has been preached and taught in our pulpits for as long as I can remember, and history records that is what has been taught since the time Christ established His kind of church in Jerusalem during His earthly ministry. And it ought to be that way. The Bible is God's inspired, infallible Word. Unfortunately, it would seem that there is a teaching among us that the Bible is only for spiritual matters.

"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." (John 17:17)

God's Word is truth. It is the standard by which everything else is judged. His Word is true when it comes to spiritual matters. His Word is true when it comes to doctrine. Most folks will agree on these things, but God's Word is not limited to Spiritual or doctrinal matters.

"If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?" (John 3:12)

The Bible has so much more in it than spiritual things. It also deals with earthly things too. Whether it is science, history, weapons, marriage, etc we can believe what it says and we can trust that God is accurate and can be trusted on these issues as well as we can trust Him when it comes to spiritual issues.

Sometimes following the truth may go against the consensus view. However we must remember that just because "everyone else" believes that way does not make it true. The majority can be wrong. In fact, God warns us "Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil..." (Exodus 23:2). There are numerous examples of this in Scripture. Here are a few examples: The consensus in the Garden of Eden was that it would be good to eat of the forbidden fruit (Genesis 3:6). The consensus among the Jews was to listen to the evil report of the spies (Numbers 13-14). Jesus Himself warned, "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." (Matthew 7:13-14).

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2Timothy 2:15)

In order to be better Christians, we need to study God's Word from cover to cover and make sure it is being rightly divided and applied in ALL areas of life. All human opinions, confessions, creeds, emotions, etc must submit to the authority of Scripture. Let us study all we can and can all we study!

Criminal Protection Zones

There are a few areas in the country which have been declared to be "gun free" or "weapon free" zones. The concept goes something like this: "Weapons (or guns) are bad, so we will ban them in order to keep people safe." Of course, experience has proven this is bad logic. Here are some examples of some of the more famous places where guns were banned yet somehow people still got shot:

Luby's Cafeteria (Killeen TX)
Columbine High School (Columbine CO)
Virginia Tech (Blacksburg VA)
Westwood Mall (Omaha NB)

Of course, I could list many, many more examples. That is the reason I prefer to call such areas as "CRIMINAL PROTECTION ZONES." Law abiding gun owners will not bring their guns into such areas, but criminals will and do often do that. The fact is, criminals prefer unarmed victims and that is why they will target malls, schools, etc that are "gun free zones."

When it comes down to it, churches ought to also consider these facts, but above that churches ought to consider Scriptures. The Bible is our only rule of faith and practice. At least that is what Baptists have always said. All human confessions, creeds, opinions, emotions, church business meetings etc must submit to the authority of the Bible. From God's Word, we must prayerfully consider the following Scriptures dealing with this issue:

1) Jesus told His Apostles to go and arm themselves with a sword.   (A sword was the best weapon money could buy in that time....)    "Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." (Luke 22:36)

2) When these brethren produced two swords among them (and by the way, they were probably openly carrying them), he did not rebuke them for having them.   "And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough." (Luke 22:38)

3) When Peter used the sword against the high priest servant, our Lord did not tell him to get rid of it, but simply to put it back into its sheath. (A modern scenario would have been to tell Peter to put his pistol back into its holster!)    "Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?"   (John 18:11)

4) Jesus Himself carried a weapon into the temple (notice that He called it His Father's house) when he cast out the money changers! "And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise." (John 2:15)

If there are Scriptural reasons for the forbidding of weapons in the Lord's house, I have not seen them. If anyone wonders, I do not make this a "test of fellowship." However, I could not be a member of a church which sets itself up with rules that are so blatantly contrary to God's Word. Any church who would do such a thing, or any church member who would work to try to get such a ruling is not being led by the Holy Spirit in such matters.

"For I am the LORD, I change not...."

Shooting in the Sun!

Spring is coming, and today I was able to get outside and shoot at steel targets. It was nice to be out in the sunshine and be able to shoot some 9mm and .45 acp down range. This range is close to my house and it belongs to a pistol club that I recently joined. Had a good day, and met some folks I had never met before.

Whether inside or outside, every gun owner ought to practice as much as possible. Make it fun and enjoy yourself while you do it! And always be safe.

Shooting Back: The Right and Duty of Self-Defense by Charl Van Wyk is a book that I only recently added to my library. It is a book that deals with many of the issues I address here and on my website. However, the author of the book actually found himself in a situation which has come to be known as the St. James Massacre. Here is Van Wyk's account of what happened:

"Grenades were exploding in flashes of light. Pews shattered under the blasts, sending splinters flying through the air. An automatic assault rifle was being fired and was fast ripping the pews - and whoever, whatever was in its trajectory - to pieces. We were being attacked!

"Instinctively, I knelt down behind the bench in front of me and pulled out my .38 special snub-nosed revolver, which I always carried with me. I would have felt undressed without it. Many people could not understand why I would carry a firearm into a church service, but I argued that this was a particularly dangerous time in South Africa...."

On that day in July 25, 1993, this dear brother was severely outgunned and outmanned, but he shot back. His book not only gives the story of what happened, but also addresses many of the concerns that the many of us have debated before or written about:

Should Christians carry weapons?
When is it appropriate to defend ourselves and those we love?
What can we, as God's people, do when our rights are threatened?

The best thing about this book is that there are many references to Scripture from the Old Testament all the way into the New. All of God's people should desire that God be glorified and His Word is honored. It should also be our desire that our actions are in accordance to the Word of God. I do feel that Brother Van Wyk is such a man.

He also brings his own experiences into the book, which are very helpful. For instance, the post-shooting trauma, the anger, the forgiveness, etc. are all parts of the aftermath. In the book, he does not shy away from writing about these things.

This book is a good reminder also that terrorism is not only an American problem and that gun laws and freedom are not only American issues. While his experience is something none of us want to go through, it is something we try to prepare for. Having a copy of this book in my personal library has caused me to think about some things I have never thought about. I would sugggest everyone buy this book!

I shoot. A lot. Not as much as some folks, but more than most people I know personally. However, I have not started reloading, yet. One of these days I plan to get the equipment I need in order to do that. Until then, I am always looking to find the best deals for ammunition.

A few months ago, while at Wal-Mart, I discovered a brand of ammunition called TulAmmo. The price was about $2-$5 cheaper than the brands I am more familiar with so I decided to buy a couple of boxes to try it out.

Now, a few hundred rounds later, I must admit I am impressed. It is available at some Wal-Mart locations and I have also seen it online at Cheaper than Dirt. It is made in Russia, and is perhaps a bit dirtier than the more well known brands I have used in the past. But so far, I have been able to use it without fail on my 9mm and .45acp handguns.

For everyday plinking and target practice, it is definitely worth the price!

Supreme Court Ruling: Westboro Baptist Church

First of all, let me say I am not defending Westboro Baptist Church's practices. That "church" has done nothing to further the cause of Christ. They are indeed an embarrassment to countless Christians, especially those of us who are Baptist. In their zeal to stand against sin, they have forgotten about love. But most of all they have forgotten to preach Jesus.

Secondly, I disagree with their method of protesting at military funerals. They are correct that sodomy is a sin and is an abomination to the Almighty God. The Scriptures are very clear. See Leviticus 18:22-25, Romans 1:26-27, etc. Marriage has always been between a man and a woman. Nothing else. Let the Westboro group spread that message from their pulpit, on the radio, tv, etc but let grieving families alone.

My purpose here is not to praise the Westboro folks but rather to praise the Supreme Court on their decision. And every God fearing man woman or church ought to be happy for this.

It would set a bad precedent if the court said such practices were unconstitutional. Unfortunately, it could be the first step of many. The next step could be to ban protests everywhere. Then they could ban the preaching against sodomy in public then on the radio/television. After that, all writings against sodomy could be banned, including the King James Bible. Preachers like me could end up in jail just for saying sodomy is a sin!

I am thankful, that for now, our Constitutional rights have been upheld. And shame on any church or preacher who believes the Court should have decided otherwise.

Two Important Bills in Ohio

I received the following from Buckeye Firearms Association about two bills which are VERY important to all freedom loving Americans living in Ohio. Here is the text of their communication:

Ask them to vote for Restaurant Carry (HB 45/SB 17) and Restoration of Rights (HB 54/SB 61)

Please contact your Senator and your Representative immediately and let them know:

1. You support Restaurant Carry (HB 45/SB 17) and Restoration of Rights (HB 54/SB 61).

2. You expect them to vote in favor of both bills.

3. You want them to move these bills immediately.

A bill with identical language passed the previous Senate, and had the clear majority of support in the previous House, but was stymied by then-Speaker Armond Budish. These bills have received more scrutiny in the past year in committee hearings than most legislation ever will. It's time our Senators and Representatives to bring these bills to a vote.

Background:

HB45/SB17 will allow citizens who hold a valid concealed handgun license (CHL) to carry a firearm in restaurants that serve alcohol. To do so, license holders may not consume any alcohol and must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to OpenCarry.org, 42 states (including every state that borders Ohio) allow non-drinking license holders to carry firearms in restaurants. These bills also reduce burdensome restrictions regarding how a license holder must transport a firearm in a car.

Currently, Ohio is the only state to place such complex limitations on license holders. Violation of these restrictions can result in felony charges that are mostly of an "administrative" nature and do not involve any intent to do harm. Still, violation of these complex rules can result in costly court proceedings and incarceration for the license holder.

HB 54/SB 61 would align Ohio law with Federal statutes and protect citizen rights. Due to a U.S. Supreme Court decision, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) has stopped accepting Ohio's court orders restoring a citizen's right to own firearms.

The purpose of this bill is to update Ohio's statutes to address this issue and protect Ohio citizens' legal rights under the law.

Weapons in Church?

Within these United States of America, there are differing laws dealing with guns in church. I would submit to you, the reader, that the government of the state (any state) cannot dictate what you as a member can or cannot carry into the church building. I would also submit to you that supporting such an idea when it comes to weapons is a slippery slope that could lead to the banning of other items. For example, if a governmental authority can block a person from carrying a gun or sword into a private church building then that same authority can legislate whether you can carry a KJV Bible in there as well.

Indeed, let us examine then, what the Scriptures have to say about weapons in the house of God for His Word is our final rule of faith and practice.

"Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. Likewise also said all the disciples. Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me. And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear." (Matthew 26:20-51)

In this commentary of the events as given here there is absolutely no indication that Peter went home to get his sword. He must have had it with him the whole time: when the Supper was given, during the all night prayer session and then when Jesus was arrested. Nowhere do we have the idea that Jesus opposed it in any of these places.

"And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise." (John 2:13-16)

When Jesus cleansed the Temple, He did took with Him a weapon. Now, I know that the temple is not the church, but Jesus called it “my Father's house.” The church is also called the house of the living God (see I Timothy 3:15). Our Lord is our best example. He did not have a "do as I say, not as I do" kind of an attitude. He never sinned and did not anywhere in all of Scripture do we find that Peter or the other Apostles were forbidden from carrying their weapons into any place where the saints were gathered as a church.

If your state is one of those who forbids the carrying of weapons into "places of worship," then write to your elected representatives and explain to them that the law must change! If the church you attend calls itself a "Bible believing" church but forbids weapons then ask them for Biblical proof as to why they have such a rule.

All human opinions, confessions, and creeds must submit to the authority of Scripture! Church authority must always be limited by Biblical authority!

Toy Guns

Growing up my brother, sister and I had toy guns. We played "war" in our yard a lot. We also knew who Clint Eastwood and John Wayne were. We played video games like "The Spear of Destiny" on the computer. I personally had an arsenal of pop guns, water guns, plastic guns, and later I even got a BB gun. This was not unusual growing up that way in the Midwest. In fact many of my friends had similar experiences.

Much to the shock (and possibly dissapointment) to many, we did not grow up to be killers. We recognized there were bad guys with guns, but we also knew there were good guys with guns.

Nowadays there is a movement to demonize this way of life. Back in December, there was an article I read in The Boston Globe called Disarming The Toy Box. You can read it for yourself, but the short version is that kids were coerced, forced and encouraged to bring in their toy guns to be destroyed.

This stunt did not prevent one crime nor did it save any lives. It was intended so little kids will grow up to think of guns as being bad and that gun confiscation will be a great idea.

It is a fact that some kids will grow up to be murderers but it is not because of the toys they play with while young. Rather, either they were not raised right or they were not listening. Consider the following passages:

"And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him." (Genesis 4:8)

Notice Cain did not play with toy guns when he was little. We're not even told what weapon was used. Cain was to be blamed, not the weapon he used or the toys he played with when he was little. Cain murdered his brother because he was a totally depraved individual acting in rebellion against God.

"Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." (Genesis 9:6)

Again we notice that God does not list any particular weapon but simply murder and the punishment had to do with the individual NOT the object.

American people (including some of God's people) have become so accustomed to hearing the left blame guns for murders that we might fall into that trap if we are not careful. We need to be like the Bereans who "....were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." (Acts 17:11) Blaming the weapon instead of the individual is not consistent with the Bible.

Taking away a child's toy guns or sheltering them from guns is not the answer to the problem. Children need to be taught early on respect for God's Word. They need to know about God's law. They need to be taught the value of human life. They need to be taught right from wrong in light of Scripture. They need to know about the safe handling of firearms. They should know guns are inanimate objects and as such can be used for good or for evil.

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6)

Immediate Action Required

There are two issues that need the immediate action of all freedom-loving Americans. I will list them here:

1) HR 308: "The Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act" has been introduced by Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) bans the sale or possession of large-capacity ammunition magazines, defined in the bill as "a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition."

I know some gun owners who assure me that there is nothing to be alarmed about this since we have a Republican majority in the House. However, I do not take anything for granted. We have lost freedoms by both parties so make sure you contact your Representative to vote NO on HR 308.

2) The second issue is the appointment of Andrew Traver as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE). Traver is a committed anti-gun extremist who has no respect for the Second Amendment to the US Constitution and has no business being put in that high position. Make sure to write your Senator today, urging them to vote against the confirmation of Andrew Traver as the director of the BATFE.

With Rifle By My Side by Kimberly Jo Simac

Let's face it, we are in a cultural war. There is an element which would love to destroy our faith, freedom and firearms. This element is attacking our children more so than ever before. I am always looking for ways to counter this attack.

Sometime back, I purchased a book from Barnes and Noble after reading about it on Downrange.TV and then finding out that it was endorsed also by Gun Owners of America. I'd like to encourage everyone to get a copy. The name of the book is With Rifle by My Side: A Second Amendment Lesson by Kimberly Jo Simac (ISBN: 0982707444). It is a book that I believe every American ought to add to their library and it should be read to children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

While this book is geared toward younger children, it is more than just a "picture book." It also includes facts, rules for gun safety, historical quotes, etc. Proverbs 22:6 says "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." The next generation needs to be taught to be followers of our Lord and to be good, responsible, gun owning citizens of this country. Books like this will help. As the author puts it, "If we don't teach our children to honor God and love this great country, then who will?"

A Need?

"Why do you NEED a gun?!?"

"Why do you NEED to carry your gun EVERYWHERE you go?!?!"

"Why would anyone NEED a gun that has a magazine above 10 rounds?!?!"

These are a few of the questions that I have heard as a gun owner. The left always wants to force us to produce a need for a constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Can you imagine if it was about freedom of speech:

"Why do you NEED freedom of speech?!?"

"Why do you NEED to have free speech EVERYWHERE you go?!?!"

"Why would anyone NEED a free speech for more than 10 minutes?!?!"

The fact is, the Bill of Rights is not about needs, but is all about freedom. I own guns with more than ten rounds that I can carry anywhere because I am free to do so.

Gun Owners and Violence

From time to time, law abiding Christian gun owners are accused of loving violence or being violent. Today I'd like to answer that accusation.

Personally, I do not like violence if it is just for the sake of being violent. That is the type of violence which is often portrayed in horror movies. Yes, there might be guns, but there might be chainsaws, knives, hammers, or any other object instead.

I am not a violent person. The gun owners I know are not violent people. I purchased a firearm for the first time several years ago because I knew there is the possibility of violence, but not because I was looking for it.

However, violence and weaponry are both necessary in our world. The Bible is very clear on this:

For example, Ecclesiastes 3:8 says that there is "A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."

Abram was not a violent person until he was put in a situation where he needed to be. Notice: "And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan." (Genesis 14:14)

David wrote in Psalm 144:1, "Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight."

Jesus Himself recognized the necessity of owning a sword, the very best weapon money could buy back then: "Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." (Luke 22:36)

And this is a short list. Other examples could certainly be cited here.

I have never yet been in a violent encounter, and I pray this will always be the case. Yet, if violence is ever brought into my life directly - a home invasion, a car jacking, kidnapping, etc - you had better believe I will react in a "violent" manner. If I or someone I love is being threatened by a violent person, I will not hesitate to use my gun and I will shoot to kill.

The point I want to make is that we carry guns not because we are looking for trouble, but because we want to be prepared if/when trouble comes. As a firm believer in the total depravity of man and the responsibility of man to protect his own family, I thank God that He has given me the freedom and ability to keep and bear arms!

Smith and Wesson vs Glock

A few years ago, I purchased a Smith and Wesson SW9VE semi-automatic pistol. It was my first real carry gun. (The only handgun I had owned prior to that purchase was a Hi-Point 45acp, which was much too large to really carry.)

The Smith and Wesson was very accurate and "ate" nearly everything I fed it, and I liked it a lot....until I tried a Glock. Now, those of you who are familiar with both weapons will know that the Smith and Wesson Sigma is very similar to a Glock in the way it works, breaks down, etc. However, the Glock has a 5.5 pound trigger pull but the Smith and Wesson has about an 11 pound trigger pull. It reminded me more of a revolver than a semi-auto.

One of my friends owns a Smith and Wesson M&P45 and when I fired it, I noticed a difference right away. His gun had a trigger pull of about 6.5 lbs. So, I decided to call Smith and Wesson customer service to ask them if they could "lighten" the trigger on the Sigma so it would be more like the M&P. I was told no, they do not do that and it would void my warranty if I had anyone do anything like that to it.

So, I told the customer service rep that I would just get a Glock instead. And that's what I did. I sold the Smith and Wesson and bought a Glock 19. I do believe I have a much better gun now than what I had before. Not that the Sigma is a bad gun....it's not. In fact, I could shoot it straight and accurately. What I am writing about is more personal preference.

My opinion, for what it's worth, if you are in the market for a good gun, get a Glock. But if you want a Smith & Wesson, go for the M&P line. You'll be glad you did. But whatever gun you have, make sure you know how it works and how to shoot it well. In other words practice a lot!

Vehicle Carry

Currently being debated is a change to Ohio's complex vehicle carry laws. I really hope something good comes of this debate.

My suggestion to those in whose power it is to change the law is to make the vehicle an extension of private property. It is legal for a person to carry a weapon any way they choose inside their own house with or without a license. Why not make it the same in my vehicle?

Under castle doctrine law, the vehicle or the home is treated the same, so my proposal is not as "far fetched" as it sounds.

Of course, ideally all states should adopt what is being called "constitutional carry." This is the law in Arizona, Alaska and Vermont. The older I get, the more I wonder why we should have a license for anything. Why should I have to get permission from the state to drive my car, fish, hunt, or carry a gun? I really do not believe the founders had licenses on their mind when they established the American Republic.

More Gun Control Coming?

In the aftermath of the horrible shooting in Arizona on 8 January 2011 in which several people were left dead and many were injured, there have been calls to increase the amount of gun control.   As a freedom loving American, I will be watching these efforts closely. But more gun control is not what we need and would not have prevented this shooting.

Until the people of this country (including our leaders) realize the weapon is not the problem, but the heart, then the legislation will always go wrong. Get rid of the guns and murders will still happen. Do a Google search for hammer murders - if you can stomach it. The fact is, there were murders before there were ever guns:

"And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him." (Genesis 4:8)

Ever notice that God does not bother to tell us what weapon Cain used to murder his brother? It may have been a knife or a rock, but God does not name the tool. This is because it does not matter.    God does name Cain and that is the one who is punished. There were no calls by God to enact "stone control" or "knife restrictions."

After the flood, God established the formula for dealing with murder:

"And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man." (Genesis 9:5-6)

]Again, no weapons regulations. Only the death penalty.

I am hearing a lot about magazine capacity. If a person is inclined and unable to bring one gun with a magazine of 30 then why not bring several guns, such as the shooting at the Northern Illinois University on 2/14/2008?   That guy had three handguns, several magazines for them and one shotgun. He actually managed to get off more rounds than the guy in Arizona was able to. (Police picked up 48 shell casings and 6 shotgun shells in Illinois.)

And so first they ban the high capacity magazines, then they will ban the guns....all guns....even revolvers (ever hear of a "New York Reload?") We have grand examples of how it will all work in Great Britain and Australia.

It is a slippery slope when we allow more regulations, rules, restrictions on ANY weapon...even if we do not see the "need" for it. Sometimes we might think to ourselves this rule does not matter to ME or that rule does not bother ME any, for in the long run it concerns us all.   For example, I had never thought much about knives until recently because I previously only carried a knife occasionally.... but it is as much a part of the Second Amendment as any other weapon. The founders knew exactly what they were doing when they used the word "arms" without specifying musket, sword, etc. And from a Biblically standpoint, we are not restricted in the manner of weapon or how we carry it.

Patrick Henry said it well when he said, "Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined.... The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun."

"...where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." (II Corinthians 3:17)

Why Firearms?

Of course, it is inevitable...this question will often come up.    "Why do you carry a gun?"   "Why do you own guns?" "Why should a preacher have a gun?"   "Why....." Well you get the picture. The question is worded a little different but always includes those two words: "Why guns?"   So in this post I am going to answer that question.

I. A HOBBY
Some folks enjoy basketball. Others collect rocks. I like guns. Shooting a gun at targets is a load of fun! I find it challenging and relaxing.   Now, before you call me crazy (again), maybe you should try it. In fact, if you are ever at my house and we have the time I will take you shooting at the range. We have a fantastic range near my home at a place called Fin Feather, Fur and they have a very excellent indoor pistol range. In the summer, it is air conditioned and in the winter, it is heated. To sweeten the deal, I will even provide the guns and the ammo!

After you have tried it for the first time, then if you don't like it that is fine. But at least give it a try.

Thomas Jefferson said it this way, "A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks."

II. RESPONSIBILITY
"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." (1Timothy 5:8)

God, in His Word, has placed a great sense of responsibility upon me as the head of my house. I am responsible to provide for my family. Of course, this includes many things, but it also means protection.   To fail to provide proper protection is a great sin, and I own firearms because they are the best way to make sure they are properly protected.    So the firearm is the best way to ensure of self-defense, defense of others (especially my own family), and defense of my home. When something goes bump in the night, I am ready to defend those who I love.    In Christ's time upon the earth, the sword was the best choice, which is why He said to the apostles: "...But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.   (Luke 22:36)

Also owning a weapon is what every responsible citizen should do, or at least consider.    The whole of citizenry benefits when at least a few take up arms. It has been said "An armed society is a polite society." And that is a fact when we consider crime has dropped over the last few years here in America while gun ownership has risen. III. FREEDOM
When I lived out west, I bought a bumper sticker which read "A Man With A Gun Is A Citizen. A Man Without A Gun Is A Subject." Owning a gun is a part of being free. This freedom was granted by God and protected by the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Notice some of the words of the founders themselves:

"Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples' liberty's teeth." - George Washington

"The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed."
- Thomas Jefferson

"Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at individual discretion in private self defense." - John Adams

"To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them." - George Mason (father of the Bill of Rights and The Virginia Declaration of Rights)

"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed, as they are in almost every country in Europe." - Noah Webster

IV. HUNTING
We live in an age where we can just run down to the grocery store and pick up a package of meat but hunting is fun, and indeed has been a necessity in the past. Although I do not get to hunt like I want to, I do own guns for hunting purposes.

This has been a "short list." Perhaps there are other reasons you own a gun...feel free to comment.

Faith or a Lack Thereof?

In my conversations with folks I have noticed that some people seem to think that if you own a firearm, that somehow you must not have faith in God like you should. Perhaps you (the reader) also think that is the case. This way of thinking must be considered in the light of the Scriptures and I'd like for us to consider some Biblical examples:

Abram
"And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan. And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus." (Genesis 14:14-15).

In this passage we read of Abram who armed himself and 318 of his servants to free his nephew who had been captured. Can you imagine the horror if a Christian man did that today? Did Abram get rebuked for such actions? Some might assume so, but that was not the case.

Israel
"Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls; From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies." (Numbers 1:2-3).

God commanded Israel to raise and train an army for national defense. Notice how God told them to do it – every man 20 years and older. In other words, every man was responsible for their defense.

David
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
(1Sa 17:40)

When David went to meet Goliath, he did not go alone. He took his sling and five smooth stones (his weapon of choice).

"Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands. And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David." (1Samuel 17:45-50)

It was have been foolish for David to face that giant warrior without a weapon. David knew the battle is the Lord's but he also knew of his responsibility.

The Apostles

"And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one." (Luke 22:35-36).

Note the importance our Lord placed in sword-ownership: If they did not have a sword, sell their garment to buy one! Now, three things about this –

He was talking to His apostles.
He gave them a command here.
Swords were the best weapons money could buy in that day.

"And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough." (Luke 22:38)

Two of the Apostles carried swords, and had them in their possession while with the Lord. When they produced two swords, He did not rebuke them for carrying their weapon with them, He simply said "It is enough."

No, it is not a lack of faith when we carry our weapons, but a sense of responsibility. I find it very hypocritical that those who would accuse us of little faith will often lock their doors at night, wear seat belts, and have insurance.

Consider this scenario:

ALL GUNS ARE BANNED. You are not allowed to carry one, or even own one. Anyone with a gun will be fined and imprisoned.

Now, ask yourself, how would that make you feel? Would you rejoice? Perhaps you would think, "A ha! Now they will have to trust the Lord!"

Ok, so how about this scenario, this time with a more common tool that most of my readers will have:

ALL LOCKS ON DOORS ARE BANNED. You are not allowed to lock your door and anyone with a locked door will be immediately sent to jail.

How would that make you feel? Any different? Why or why not?

Yes, I trust God, but I also believe that I have certain responsibilities to keep myself and my family safe. The reason I own a gun is very similar to the reason I have a lock on my door.

Faith Freedom and Firearms

Hello and welcome to my new blog! I hope and pray this will be useful to those who find it, and that those who do will tell others about it. Since this is my first post here, I thought it necessary to define some things right away since words mean different things to different people sometimes.

FAITH - By faith I mean, faith in Jesus Christ. I am talking about faith in the very Creator of the universe, the Sovereign God of the Bible, the Lord of lords and King of kings.

FIREARMS - By firearms, I mean handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Semi-automatic pistols are my favorite but we will discuss other items also on here. Hey, we will probably also discuss knives, swords, and other weapons as well.

FREEDOM - When I speak of freedom, I mean limited government, the kind of liberty the USA was founded on. I am talking about limited government and freedom as outlined in the US Constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights.

In later posts, I will (the Lord willing) elaborate on these items. May the Lord bless each and every one of you!
